How to Get More from Your Garden

by amanda on February 19, 2010

Your garden can truly be like an extension to your home in terms of adding decorative flair. Just as you’d decorate a living room or bedroom, you may take the same concerns into consideration when choosing items from your garden. Whether you’ve chosen to go with an elegant bed out front or a more fun and personalized spread in the back yard, you can really let your personality shine through when customizing your outdoor space. Although you may feel like you’ve done it all, you might be looking to get a little more out of your home’s garden.

Researching some different species of flowers when choosing items for your garden can really help you spice up your space and introduce blooms that both you and your neighbors have never seen before. With the glory of the internet right at our fingertips – you can order seeds and bulbs from all over the world that will help you add variety and color to your spread. Do your research and find some unique species that will thrive in your climate while acting as beautiful additions to your home. Flowers make great conversation pieces and if you like to entertain outdoors, there’s really nothing better.

If you currently just have a spread of flowers, don’t be afraid of adding in some small accents like decorative grasses and even ferns. A pop of green throughout your bed will give it a fresh, natural look and enhance the color scheme even more. Play with varying heights of plants and create a “mini-landscape” within your garden. Variety will not only make your bed look more attractive, but it may even create a more thriving environment for your plants to live in. You want your garden to truly be an eye catcher – so making sure that is a multi-leveled, multi-faceted creation will ensure that it turns heads.

When the sun goes down, your garden may loose its “oomph” and get somewhat lost in the darkness. If you have a beautiful arrangement, especially in the front of your home, consider some lighting to accent all of your hard work once nightfall sets in. Whether you choose to go with spotlights, subtle ground lighting, or even overhead lighting if the venue fits it – you can brighten up your lawn, as well as showcase your garden all day long.

Finally, mulch is always a great way to ensure that your garden looks clean and neat, and it also provides lots of growth benefits to the plants that is surrounds. If you’re looking to create a distinct border around your garden, make colors pop, or just neaten things up a bit – mulch is a great, natural solution to all of these issues.

Whichever route you choose to go with, every home can benefit from a beautiful and well maintained garden. Whether you’ve been into gardening for quite some time or you’re looking to plant one around your home for the very first time – take some of these useful hints into consideration.

Creating Your Own Bathroom Color Scheme

by amanda on January 29, 2010

In a room like the bathroom, you may feel like a little bit frustrated when it comes to choosing a decorative scheme. Bathrooms are notoriously small – so finding the space to put decorative ideas into effect can really present an issue. A great solution for sprucing your bath up is to focus on color. Color schemes can really liven up a space and add that personalized decorative touch. If you’re thinking about a new color scheme for your bathroom – take some of these steps when choosing your hues.

•    Accessories make great pops of color if you’re not looking to take on a full scale paint job. A white bathroom can be livened up and modernized by saucy red accessories, or if you’re looking for a brighter and lighter look – choose yellow as your accent color. Cabinet and drawer pulls, soap dispensers, and even shelving in colorful shades can create a color scheme quickly and easily. Perfect if you’re not interested in spending a great amount of time updating your bathroom or you’re living in an apartment where painting the walls may not be an option.

•    Accent Walls are a great starting point and give you a bit of inspiration for a color scheme throughout the rest of the room. Painting the main wall (the wall that sink or vanity rests on is a great choice) a colorful shade will liven up the room. Once you’ve painted your wall, choose accessories and hardware in colors that are complimentary to your accent shade. Without even trying – you’ve instantly created a coordinated color scheme within your bathroom!

•    Material, although it may not be the first thing that comes to mind, can play a big role in both the decorative look and color scheme of your bathroom. Things like window treatments, shower curtains, towel bars and even small rugs are great ways to enhance a color scheme or add some color to the room without paint. If you’re crafty on the sewing machine – create your own custom drapes and a shower curtain to match! Professional looks are all about coordination!

•    Coordination, as aforementioned, is huge when it comes to your color scheme. If you’re redoing your bath, replace the accessories you currently have that may clash. Sure – you may have been using that purple and green soap dispenser forever – but is it working with your new silver and blue color scheme? Probably not. Investing in new, coordinated accessories for your space will give you a chance to replace the items that have seen better days while improving the overall look of your room.

Just because your bathroom doesn’t get as much traffic as your kitchen, living room, or dining room doesn’t mean that you can give it the cold shoulder when it comes to adding decorative touches. Get creative with your color scheme and think outside the box. Don’t shy away from bright colors or metallics… they can add personality and life to your otherwise dull space. Creating a new look for your room requires both creativity and bravery – so dive head first into your bathroom’s new look. You just might be surprised with how great you can be with color!
